Guns- You Buy That?
We’ve all read in the DDN this morning about the Supreme Court overruling a Trump era ban on bump stock. My thoughts immediately went to 2019, to the music filled downtown Dayton Oregon District where a mass shooter unleashed over 40 bullets in 30 seconds killing 9 and wounding 17 others, very likely someone you knew or knew of through others- real people with real beautiful lives. Next I thought of all my musician friends on stage, in crowds constantly. My mind went next to the 2017 Las Vegas shooting, the deadliest by one shooter in the country’s history- 60 dead and 413 wounded. These people, these victims were at a music concert. I’m sure Colt and Daniel Defense among other gun manufacturers were thrilled because they cleared thousands of dollars in profits from the arsenal the shooter had purchased. Gun makers aren’t satisfied with the money they make as suppliers to the military, or to game hunters, so they transitioned to greedy soulless fiends making money off every person with a mental problem, with a grudge, with untreated rage, with paranoia, with criminal intent, made victims themselves because they were able to get ahold of a deadly, deadly weapon and so they will have so much higher odds of suffering untold tragedy as well. The next time you go listen to live music in our beloved Miami Valley, put a moment or two aside to logically figure out who in government on all levels will help eliminate this scourge to the exact degree we all agree. Do it knowledgeably- you won't find answers on Tik Tok or FB or Twixxer and certainly not here. There are few other issues that destroy so much so quickly. (Well I can think of one other.) Until then we’re not free to be too loud, or too quiet, or accidentally linger at a green light for a second too long or walk down a street or deliver a pizza or be depressed, or pick a fight with that clown next to you, or go to school or hear and misquote our favorite artists lyrics playing our favorite songs that is unless you’re willing to realistically risk your life and anyone's you invite with you.
All guns all the time = freedom?
You Buy That?
June 14 2024- Cheers!
Craft beer has always been a big hobby in Dayton. I saw supply stores around town in the 80s and 90s and had a few friends who got very good at making beer.
Apparently, it was a big deal all over the state because the Columbus Dispatch reported in 2013 that the state legislature passed a law that made it far less expensive to get a license to brew, to sell to retail outlets and other permissions. The larger brewers also got some leeway from what is normally tightly controlled. In 2021 and 2023 further restrictions were eliminated or changed, leading to 430 craft breweries in that state since the changes. Many if not most of the breweries have serving areas with different amenities. It's a real bonanza. Of course, there’s the usual skepticism that the growth is sustainable, while I have faith the market will slow and curtail the expansion when the demand tells them to do it.
In the meantime, I’ve noticed as each of these marvelous establishments endeavor to differentiate in more ways than the beers, regular music performances have started popping up in many of those in the area. Devil Wind in Xenia has added some nice audio hardware to their ever growing performance stage and have an open mic night. Bock Family Brewing in Centerville has dipped their toes in the performance pool too. They typically have music at least one evening of the week. Crooked Handle in Springboro has a slew of music offerings throughout each month, all listed on their web site calendar. Lock 27, also in Centerville, has a generous sprinkling of regular music events every month as well.
The next time you pop in to your favorite brewery, check their events schedule out to see if they’ve added music or are going add it. It seems it’ll be more likely than not!
June 8 2024- Thanks to the “mythical” global warming, it’s now a lot easier to become the victim of extreme heat if you are outside at, say, a music festival or concert. Check out this Scientific American article at the link. I figured, scientists, and science reporters, you know, who have facts we need to know is the way to go!
My short version (don’t trust it-read the entire article lol) is drink plenty of fluids, electrolytes, double down on the sunscreen and if you start having leg cramps or feel way too uncomfortably
hot, get to a cool place, somewhere that shields you from the sun. Don’t hesitate if you feel something’s wrong because after the cramps, confusion is one of the next symptoms. That won’t make noticing there’s a problem any easier.
Oh, and, don't kill the messenger- NO ALCOHOL.

June 8 2024- If you didn’t know yet, Peach’s Grill makes it easy peazy to see their open mic nights. They post them every week on YouTube under the subscription, “Peach’s Open Mic.” The link is here… https://www.youtube.com/@PeachsOpenMic
The sound, all things considered, is very good and it is regularly hosted by the energetic, inimitable Kyleen Downes. She happens to have a recent single release, Left on the Pavement, that is solid rock, super catchy. It's here...

June 7 2024- SPRING RINGS IN OUTDOOR MUSIC-
When the spring arrives in the Miami Valley it means thousands of outdoor seats opening up for music. Between Rose Music (4,200), and Fraze (4,300) alone it’s 8,500! Cinci venues like Riverbend and Timberwolf add another 30,000 (yes-30,000!!!) and that’s not counting shows like Porchfest or the the outdoor park/venue Levitt Pavilion.
We’ll try our best to keep you up to date through the glory of it all, with a fresh list out today and more added each day
